The site is at the former location of the historic Grand Hotel (1889-1966). This historic building was considered to be one of the leading hotel establishments of its time. Today only the facade of the hotel remains, and an 80s glass & plaster clad office tower has taken residence in its place.
Our Proposal is to convert the site back into a place of residence – penthouse flats. The exterior will carry the presence of a lightweight structure – rationalised by ‘squaring off’ the hexagonal 80s plan. Given the nature of the elevated site, the floor plate gain resulting from squarring the hexagonal plan will provide additional balcony space – a platform where residence can enjoy the view. The interior spaces will be fitted with a high level of finishes – providing comfortable living spaces just like the Grand Hotel once did.
